Wigan Athletic supporting second Pride event
Following the huge success of the first ever Wigan Pride in 2016, Wigan Athletic Football Club will be showing their support for the event again this year on Saturday 12th August by helping to sponsor the celebration.
This year’s event will celebrate 50 years since the decriminalisation of homosexuality in the United Kingdom, with LGBT+ activist and star of the stage and screen Ian McKellen set to make an appearance at the event which takes place in Wigan town centre.
Wigan Athletic will be celebrating Wigan Pride as part of the club’s ‘Together’ programme, which highlights the work undertaken by Wigan Athletic Football Club, its registered charity Wigan Athletic Community Trust and the DW Stadium in promoting equality and diversity.
Latics staff will be based at a stall in Believe Square throughout the day to talk to people attending the event.
Jonathan Jackson, Chief Executive of Wigan Athletic Football Club, said: “After the success of Wigan Pride 2016, we are delighted to support the event for the second consecutive year on Saturday. For the town of Wigan it is fantastic to host an event like Wigan Pride and Wigan Athletic are proud to be a part of it.
“As an organisation we are committed and fully supportive of our ‘Together’ programme of equality and diversity, and anticipate the event will be another great success.”
A spokesperson for the organisers of Wigan Pride, BYOU, said: “It’s really important that sports teams show their support for community members and this includes LGBTQ+, so for Wigan Athletic to show their support for Wigan Pride gives visibility to a real issue and helps to tackle it head on.
“We’re really grateful and appreciate all the support Wigan Athletic and Wigan Athletic Community Trust give to Wigan Pride and we now look forward to Saturday 12th August.”
