Toon stars launch anti-racism DVD
Alan Pardew and his Newcastle United players are to help launch a new anti-racism DVD at St James’ Park today (21 November).
The educational video is part of the Show Racism the Red Card (SRtRC) campaign, which aims to rid football of racism.
Danny Simpson, Shola Ameobi and Pardew all appear in the video to warn young people about prejudice and give advice to people who may have witnessed or been the victims of abuse.
“I think they definitely do need to realise that racist abuse isn’t a laugh,” Simpson says during an interview for the film.
Ged Grebby, chief executive of SRtRC, said: “In the film, players from around the world, across many leagues, speak out against racism. We’re convinced this will have a huge impact on young people and teachers can be confident showing this film in their classroom.”
The stars from Newcastle will be joined at today’s launch by pupils from Corbridge Middle, Percy Main Primary and Chillingham Road Primary Schools. The young people will watch the film and take part in a range of anti-racism workshops.
