Tel Aviv striker sparks controversy with celebration
Hapoel Tel Aviv striker Itay Shechter celebrated his goal in the club’s Champions League match against Red Bull Salzburg last night by pulling out a kippah from his sock and praying.
Israeli side Hapoel won the match in Austria 3-2, but Shecther’s celebrations earned him a booking from the Portuguese referee Pedro Proenca.
Following Shechter’s actions, there were reports of a row in the VIP box after Hapoel directors started an argument with their Austrian counterparts, who did not react well to the incident.
Shechter’s antics also appeared to incite the crowd, who chanted “Sheis Israel” (**** Israel).
