Everton reached the quarter-finals of the Emirates FA Cup for the fourth time in the past five seasons as they beat Bournemouth 2-0 at the Vitality Stadium. Charlie Daniels missed a first-half penalty for the hosts when his effort was saved by Joel Robles.
Ross Barkley opened the scoring for the Toffees through a deflected strike, before ‘Next 20’ ambassador Romelu Lukaku settled the tie from close range to continue his impressive form in front of goal this season. Everton will meet Chelsea at Goodison Park in the last eight.
Harry Maguire completed 90 minutes for Hull City as they held holders Arsenal to a goalless draw at the Emirates Stadium in a repeat of the 2014 final. The Tigers goalkeeper Eldin Jakupovic made a string of impressive saves to keep the Gunners out and earn his side a replay, with a home tie against Watford in the next round at stake.
In League One, Romaine Sawyers played as Walsall fell to a 2-1 home defeat against fellow promotion hopefuls Wigan Athletic. Conor McAleny opened the scoring for the Latics just before half-time with an effort from 25 yards, before Sam Mantom thumped an equaliser in midway through the second-half.
Both sides had chances to win the match but Yanic Wildschut’s injury-time goal sealed the three points for Wigan and pushes them up into the automatic promotion places. The Saddlers remain winless in three and are still yet to win at the Bescot Stadium in 2016.
Danny Rose was an unused substitute as Bury overturned a two-goal deficit to comprehensively beat Colchester United 5-2 at Gigg Lane. The U’s stormed into a two-goal lead thanks to strikes from Chris Porter and Gavin Massey, but the game turned on its head midway through the first half after defender Tom Eastman received a red card. Ryan Lowe pulled one back before the break, whilst an Andrew Tutte hat-trick and Craig Jones strike sealed victory for Bury.
Michael Harriman played as Wycombe Wanderers dropped out of the League Two play-off places after losing to leaders Northampton Town. Danny Rose scored the only goal of the game for the Cobblers who secured their ninth straight victory and moved 10 points clear at the top of the table.
In the Scottish Championship, Kenny Miller’s stunning volley was enough for Rangers to beat Queen of the South at Palmerston Park. Wes Foderingham had a busy afternoon for the Ibrox club, as he saved smartly from Ryan Conroy’s free-kick and from Chris Higgins’ header. However, Miller’s strike was enough to earn Rangers the victory and restore their lead at the top of the table back to eight points.
Jamaal Lascelles played the full game for Newcastle United in their 2-1 win over Lillestrom as the Magpies took advantage of a weekend off to enjoy some warm-weather training in Spain.
