Reading legend Andy Alleyne passes away
Reading legend Andy Alleyne, the first black player to appear for the club, sadly passed away yesterday morning (20 June).
Full-back Andy played for the club’s youth teams in the late 1960’s, but was not offered a professional contract with Reading until caretaker manager Jimmy Wallbanks took over in 1971.
He provided a number of fond memories for fans, none more so than scoring on his debut in October 1972 – when he remarkably smashed a volley in from the halfway line during a 1-1 draw with Southport.
On that day he also made history as the first black player to appear in Reading’s first team.
Andy went on to make a total of 53 first-team appearances before returning to local football and playing for non-league sides such as Newbury Town and Thatcham Town.
Reading’s official site will be running a number of tributes to Andy over the coming days. Please click here to find out more.
