Police investigating Twitter abuse aimed at James Perch
Newcastle United defender James Perch has allegedly become the latest footballer to be racially abused online.
Police are today (2 April) making enquiries about a sick remark left on the social-networking site Twitter, directed at the Magpies defender.
The comment posted after the Toon’s 2-0 victory over Liverpool, during which the Merseysiders’ Pepe Reina was sent off for head-butting Perch, said: “I want to punch Perch in his n****r head.”
The tweet sparked a barrage of outrage on Twitter. And a member of the public, from County Durham, quickly reported it to police.
A spokeswoman for Durham Police, the force investigating the abuse, said: “Northumbria Police contacted us yesterday afternoon after a member of the public complained about allegedly racist comments posted on Twitter. As the complainant lives in County Durham the matter was referred to Durham Constabulary and an appointment has been made for an officer to visit them and take further details.”
