One Game, One Community weeks of action 2011 off to bumper start
A mass of activity took place around the grounds of the top four divisions of English football this weekend as the first round of One Game, One Community weeks of action 2011 fixtures were held.
Having been officially launched at Ford’s Centre for Engineering and Manufacturing Excellence (CEME) motor plant in Dagenham last Thursday (13 October), the weeks of action continued apace as players warmed up in black and yellow One Game, One Community t-shirts, managers and club officials proudly wore the campaign’s stickers and badges, and community groups displayed banners on the pitches of their local professional clubs.
Supporting Kick It Out with their dedicated weeks of action games on the initiative’s opening weekend, Norwich City brushed aside Swansea City with a commanding 3-1 victory at Carrow Road, Watford came up short in front of their own supporters as they were beaten 2-0 by Crystal Palace, Tranmere Rovers claimed three points at home to Oldham Athletic, and Dagenham and Redbridge suffered a 3-2 defeat to Plymouth Argyle, who registered their first away success of the season, at the London Borough of Barking and Dagenham Stadium.
Giving their backing to the campaign on and off the pitch, this season’s One Game, One Community ambassadors fared well too, as Shola Ameobi’s late rocket helped Newcastle United snatch a late draw against Tottenham Hotspur, Reading’s Jem Karacan secured all three points for his side with a last-gasp strike at Burnley, and Stevenage star Darius Charles and Cheltenham Town winger Kaid Mohamed made large contributions to their team’s wins over Charlton Athletic and Burton Albion respectively.
