Next 20 Round-Up: Callum Wilson bags first Premier League goal in a year
Kick It Out’s ‘Next 20’ initiative involves players from across the Premier League, English Football League (EFL) and Women’s Super League, who represent the organisation as ambassadors and help to spread the key messages of equality and inclusion.
Ross Hobart provides the latest update from the 2016-17 season, as our ambassadors make their impression on the pitch.
Callum Wilson scored his first Premier League goal in almost a year as Bournemouth beat West Bromwich Albion 1-0 at the Vitality Stadium. The frontman skilfully flicked in Adam Smith’s cross 11 minutes from time to earn the Cherries’ their first win of the season and help them leapfrog their opponents into 12th position.
In the Women’s Super League, Toni Duggan’s Manchester City Women met Jordan Nobbs’ Arsenal Ladies for the second time this week, with City edging out their opponents 1-0 in a tightly-contested affair. Jane Ross claimed the only goal of the game, as Steph Houghton’s free-kick deflected in off the Scottish forward. Nobbs came close to equalising for the Gunners, but she was denied by a fingertip save from Karen Bardsley. The win moves City seven points clear at the top of the league and assures them of Champions League football next season.
Elsewhere in the Premier League, Welsh international Ben Davies made his first start of the season for Tottenham Hotspur in their 4-0 thrashing of Stoke City. Son Heung-Min netted a brace, before goals from Dele Alli and Harry Kane secured Spurs’ first away win of the season ahead of their Champions League return on Tuesday.
After featuring in the England Under-21’s 6-0 thrashing of Norway in midweek, Nathan Redmond completed 90 minutes for Southampton in their 2-1 defeat at Arsenal on Saturday. Santi Cazorla’s injury-time penalty gave Arsene Wenger’s side a dramatic victory over the Saints, who may consider themselves unlucky to leave the Emirates empty-handed.
Romaine Sawyers was part of a Brentford side that secured a hard-fought 2-0 win at Brighton and Hove Albion. Scott Hogan scored in either half to earn Dean Smith’s side their first away victory of the season and ended the Seagulls’ unbeaten home record which stretched back until New Year’s Day.
Jason Lowe featured in Blackburn Rovers’ 1-1 draw away at Queens Park Rangers, with on-loan Sam Gallagher’s rescuing a point for Owen Coyle’s men with a header 17 minutes from time.
In League One, Gael Birigimana appeared for Coventry City in their 1-1 draw away at Millwall. Marvin Sordell put the Sky Blues ahead with his first goal for the club, but Aidan O’Brien’s late equaliser denied Tony Mowbray’s side their first victory of the campaign.
Daniel Powell came off the bench for Milton Keynes Dons in their 1-1 draw at Bolton Wanderers. Mark Beevers put the home side ahead, before Ryan Colclough equalised from close range. Karl Robinson’s men then missed the chance to return home with all three points, when Kieran Agard saw his spot-kick saved by Mark Howard.
In League Two, Michael Harriman featured for Wycombe Wanderers as they were on the wrong end of a 4-2 score-line against promotion favourites Portsmouth.
Wes Foderingham played 90 minutes for Rangers as they lost 5-1 to Celtic in the first Old Firm derby of the season. Moussa Dembele bagged a hat-trick, while goals from Scott Sinclair and Stuart Armstrong added to the scoreline in a one-sided affair at Celtic Park.
