Man arrested for racially aggravated public order offence at Reading-West Brom game
A man has been arrested for a racially aggravated public order offence during Reading’s FA Cup win over West Brom, Thames Valley Police have confirmed.
The force say they are investigating a number of separate incidents of disorder during the match at the Madejski stadium, including West Brom’s Chris Brunt being struck in the face by a coin he claims was thrown by one of his own supporters.
Thames Valley sergeant Richard Noone also confirmed that objects were thrown between supporters in both the home and away sections of the ground and that a bottle was thrown at a Reading player.
The officer, of the Tactical and Football Operations division, said in a statement: “We are investigating a number of incidents of disorder during the second half.
“These include objects being thrown between those sitting in the home section and those sitting in the away section. A bottle was also thrown in the direction of a Reading player.
“Also during the second half, a 37-year-old man from Sandwell, West Midlands, was arrested for a racially aggravated public order offence. The arrest was in connection with an incident during which a steward was verbally abused. The man who was arrested has been released on police bail until 1 April.
“Further, after the game, a West Bromwich Albion player was struck by an object thrown from the crowd. The player was treated for a cut to his face by medical staff at the stadium. We will be speaking to the player in due course to discuss the matter.
“We would ask anyone with any information about these incidents to contact Thames Valley Police immediately. The easiest way to do this is by calling 101 and quoting reference number 1307 (20/2).
“I would particularly appeal to anyone who has videos of these incidents to contact police, as such footage might aid our investigations.
“I understand that some people don’t feel comfortable speaking to police, so alternatively you can contact the independent charity Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111. No personal details are taken, information is not traced or recorded and you will not go to court.”
Reading won the FA Cup fifth-round tie 3-1 after goals from Paul McShane, Michael Hector and Lucas Piazon saw them come from behind following Darren Fletcher’s opener.
