The Tower Hamlets Youth League (THYL) concluded their summer league season by hosting a football tournament supported by Kick It Out on Saturday 19 August.
The event celebrated the footballing abilities of young people from the local community by showcasing their talents in front of over 300 players, parents and supporters from different teams in Stepney Green.
The league hosted the day with the aim of engaging children in football to develop personal and social skills such as commitment, timekeeping, discipline and learning to work as a team.
24 teams attended the tournament in both seven-a-side and 11-a-side formats, with a variety of age groups taking part, from Under-8s to Under-16s.
Kick It Out’s Grassroots Advisor, Imrul Gazi, worked closely with the THYL and attended the tournament which was supported through the organisation’s Grassroots Activity Fund.
He spoke of his pride to be involved in the occasion alongside the opportunity for players from different backgrounds and communities to take part in the event.
“I am extremely proud of the work the THYL have done to display this showcase event for the community by bringing in such diverse flavours of young footballers from multi ethnic backgrounds in one location and uniting them.
“The level of respect shown to each other on this event was unique. I am both very proud and delighted to have been involved in helping this event come to life”.
THYL were delighted with the success of the tournament, and thanked both Imrul and Kick It Out for their support.
A spokesperson said: “We would like to thank Kick It Out and Imrul Gazi for supporting this successful event.
“We hope their support continues so that we can continue to support teams participating in THYL leagues and break down barriers to run and help to engage many children and young people into sport as well as keeping them away from negative issues surrounding them.”
