Kick It Out statement on Bradford City V Burnley fixture
Following an alleged racist incident during Saturday’s (23 July) pre-season friendly between Bradford City and Burnley at the Northern Commercials stadium, Kick It Out has issued the following statement.
Burnley striker Andre Gray should be commended for drawing public attention to the mindless actions of his own supporters after allegations of race hate abuse towards a Bradford City player.
The abused Bradford City player drew match officials’ attention to this and they followed the correct procedure by stopping the game and requesting the club look into the matter. One fan was ejected while another left voluntarily.
Both clubs have issued statements on the matter and have rightly condemned such behaviour. They have both worked with West Yorkshire police to identify those involved from CCTV footage and Burnley requested fans to come forward with information. This was successful following the club’s announcement that an indefinite ban has been given to a Burnley supporter.
Kick It Out is pleased to note that urgent action has been taken to address this unacceptable behaviour, particularly at a time when there is increased levels of race hate abuse.
The organisation has been in contact with the player and will continue to offer support and guidance wherever needed, and has also been liaising closely with both clubs.
Kick It Out would like to remind supporters and players of the importance of reporting any form of discrimination they witness at any game, from the Premier League, English Football League and Women’s Super League, through to non league and grassroots fixtures.
With a ball yet to be kicked in the official 2016/17 men’s season, this pre-season friendly shows there’s still much work to be done to eradicate discrimination from the game.
Reports can be made confidentially and if they’re made via the Kick It Out app, users can attach video, photos and audio to support any reports. Supporters can also report to their nearest steward at a game.
*Statement amended to reflect Burnley’s indefinite ban handed to supporter.
