Kick It Out statement on Andre Gray
Following confirmation from The Football Association (FA) that Burnley striker Andre Gray has been suspended for four matches after comments made on social media, Kick It Out has issued the following statement.
“Kick It Out strongly condemns all forms of discrimination and notes the decision to suspend Andre Gray following the discovery of discriminatory tweets sent by the player in 2012.
“Despite the historical nature of these messages, it does not change the seriousness of the hate-filled language used and punishment is justified.
“The organisation believes education is an essential tool in tackling discriminatory behaviour across football and wider society.
“Kick It Out will continue to work with clubs across the leagues to educate players about discrimination and this case shows there’s still much to be done.
“This incident should serve as notice to all footballers about their conduct on social media and that messages of a racial or homophobic nature are never acceptable, whether in person or online.
“Gray himself has stated how he’s a changed individual and we hope he now uses his position in a positive way to promote equality and inclusion in football.
“Footballers must understand their position within the game and play their part in helping to eliminate discrimination from the sport.”
