International Festival of Culture in Minehead this weekend
This weekend (18 July) sees the fifth International Festival of Culture arrive in Minehead.
The event will be an opportunity for the diverse community of West Somerset to celebrate culture. The festival is expected to bring hundreds of people together from across the South West to share in this event.
Over the last five years the Midwest European Community Association (MECA) has delivered community engagement work, encouraging large numbers of people to join a variety of projects aimed at empowering young people and adults.
The organisation now enjoy support from the public and affiliated organisations such as the Somerset Football Association, Somerset County Council, Avon and Somerset Police and NHS Somerset.
This year’s programme will include some new additions to the usual list of attractions, such as a Somerset World Cup football tournament and drumming workshops.
In addition, there will be international food tastings, poetry reading, as well as a fashion show, put on by Design and Technology students at West Somerset College.
The festival is being supported by West Somerset Council, who are committed to promoting diversity and understanding the needs of the local diverse community.
An African-Brazilian drumming parade will kick start the festival, starting in the centre of Minehead, arriving at the West Somerset Community College and Sports Centre, the venue of the day’s event.
The International Festival is being funded by Somerset County Council, Magna West Somerset Housing Association, Avon and Somerset Police and NHS Somerset.
