Dortmund's Michy Batshuayi hears 'monkey noises in stands'
Following messages from Borussia Dortmund striker Michy Batshuayi on Twitter, alleging racist abuse towards him at their Europa League match against Atalanta, our Trustee, Garth Crooks OBE, has commented on the recent incidents in Europe.
Garth Crooks OBE, Trustee of Kick It Out, said: “Kick It Out is concerned about recent alleged incidents across Europe where referees have appeared to not observe agreed protocols.
“The organisation have raised the issues with the FARE Network about recent cases involving Mario Balotelli and Michy Batshuayi and have asked Bobby Barnes, the President of the European Division of FIFPro, to highlight this issue at the UEFA Congress in Bratislava this weekend.”
Michy Batshuayi says he heard “monkey noises in the stands” as Borussia Dortmund knocked Atalanta out of the Europa League in Bergamo.
The on-loan Chelsea forward tweeted: “2018 and still racists monkey noises in the stands … really ?!
“Hope you have fun watching the rest of the Europa League on TV while we are through.”
Dortmund won 4-3 on aggregate after Marcel Schmelzer cancelled out Rafael Toloi’s opener for the Italians.
Last month, Atalanta received a suspended one-game stand closure after Napoli defender Kalidou Koulibaly was subjected to racist chants during a Serie A game.
