A.S.P.I.R.E ambassador supports Telford College's Equality and Diversity Week
A.S.P.I.R.E ambassador Sophie Cowell delivered a workshop on the activity of Kick It Out to students at Telford College of Arts and Technology on 15 February.
Taking place during the college’s Equality and Diversity Week, Sophie delivered a workshop to students on various sports programmes on a variety of topics surrounding the work of football’s equality and inclusion organisation.
Sophie began by discussing the history of Kick It Out – why it was developed and how it expanded to cover all forms of discrimination. Sophie reflected on the importance of raising awareness and also went through some of the current initiatives and activity taking place in the education and professional game areas.
This was followed by a quiz on some of the current issues in football, such as social media, which included factual information around diversity in the game.
The session concluded with the students discussing how they could react if they experienced discrimination themselves or witnessed it happening to a teammate.
Speaking afterwards Sophie commented: “It was great to visit Telford College of Arts and Technology to explain the work of Kick It Out to their students.
“In my role as an A.S.P.I.R.E ambassador, it is really important to spread awareness of the work Kick It Out do and this was a great opportunity to discuss how vital it is that everyone is aware of equality and inclusion in sport and society.
“The students had some really good suggestions as to how they could support themselves and their teammates when it came to issues of discrimination – which will hopefully enable them to react to any incidents they may witness or suffer in the future.”
