Shapla FC to host fasting event
The Football Supporters’ Federation (FSF) will host a fasting event in Bradford tomorrow (Wednesday) with Shapla FC, in an event backed by Kick It Out, Bradford City FC, supporters group Bangla Bantams and West Riding FA.
The event will bring together many diverse parties on the 14th day of Ramadan as they collectively learn about the holy month.
The event starts at 20:30 on Wednesday, with an introduction from Shapla FC’s co-founder Humayan Islam. Humayun will make way for a short speech from Anwar Uddin, the FSF’s Diversity and Campaigns Manager. Anwar was the first British Asian to captain a club in the Football League and remains involved in football through his work at the FSF and as the manager of Sporting Bengal.
Before prayers and the opening of fasts, there will be the chance for people to ask questions about fasting, Ramadan and football.
Anwar, who will be fasting on the day, is looking forward to the event: “A lot of teams have gone back into pre-season training, and for Muslim players, the heat and intensity is just another thing they have to deal with, as well as not eating or drinking until sunset, while continuing to play to the best of their ability.
“Shapla and Bangla Bantams have worked really hard since they were founded, and events like this will help bring a community of passionate football fans together as the local professional club, Bradford City, start their pre-season preparations.”
The evening follows up from the event held in the BEAP centre in February, which saw over 100 young people from the local community participate in activities organised by Kick It Out, FSF, Bradford City and West Riding CFA.
